In a world where creators are increasingly taking the reins, multi-talented powerhouse Stormi Maya is proving that with a powerful story and a dedicated fanbase, anything is possible. Her indie film project, “Hicktown,” just blew past its initial crowdfunding goal on Kickstarter with days to spare, and now she’s set her sights on a much bigger prize.
So, What’s ‘Hicktown’ All About?
Get ready for a story that promises to be as raw and intense as it is heartfelt. “Hicktown,” written, produced by, and starring Stormi Maya, dives deep into the suffocating life of Amber (played by Maya), a biracial woman trapped in a small, rural Texas town by her racist family. Looking for an escape, she finds herself in a desperate situation, prostituting herself for her family’s benefit.
Her world is turned upside down when she meets Lenny, a Black man fresh out of prison, portrayed by the incredible Khalil Kain (whom you’ll remember from the classic film Juice). Determined to rebuild his life, Lenny sees a kindred spirit in Amber. The two decide to flee, embarking on a powerful journey of self-discovery, confronting their pasts, and fighting for a future they can call their own.

The Power of the Crowd
Maya turned to Kickstarter to bring her vision to life, and her fans answered the call. The initial $10,000 goal—enough for a “bare bones” production with a skeleton crew—has been successfully funded. But Stormi isn’t settling. She’s now pushing for the stretch goals that will transform “Hicktown” from a raw indie into a polished cinematic experience.
What’s the difference? The “true budget” of $30,000 would allow for a professional crew, fair wages, crucial location securing, and a festival submission strategy. The “ultimate dream film,” as the campaign calls it, sits at $50,000 and would unlock high-end post-production, expanded distribution, and more. This is a perfect example of modern fan engagement, where supporters aren’t just consumers but active partners in the creative process.
A True Passion Project
For Stormi, who has built a massive following across social media, music, and content creation, this film is deeply personal. She’s not just making a movie; she’s shining a light on difficult, important conversations.
“This is definitely a passion project. It’s also to open up people’s eyes to the realities that Black men are disproportionately accused and incarcerated for crimes they didn’t commit… and what it’s like to be biracial and feel like you don’t belong and be isolated. Obviously, the second part applies to my life, but I have seen many people be affected by both.”
Maya recently shared her excitement on her X account, telling followers, “We made our initial goal for Hicktown on Kickstarter! … Thank you to everyone who supported us so far! I’m so excited to get this film made!”
From Creator to Filmmaker
Stormi Maya is part of a growing wave of creators leveraging their platforms—from Instagram and X to OnlyFans—to bypass traditional Hollywood gatekeepers. By going directly to her audience, she maintains creative control and ensures her uncompromising vision for “Hicktown” makes it to the screen.
It’s a bold move that speaks to a larger industry trend: the future of entertainment is increasingly in the hands of the creators themselves, funded by the fans who believe in their stories.
“This indie film will help people see the realities of both,” Stormi says. “I’m so grateful to be able to make the film and have such an incredible cast and crew. Hopefully, we will make the stretch budget for the best possible film.”
With the initial funding secured, production is a go. But as the clock ticks down on the Kickstarter campaign, the question remains: will the community rally to help Stormi Maya build her ultimate dream?
